This panel explores performance as a means of decolonizing the archive.
How might performance art challenge the perspectives embedded in colonial archives
while recovering marginalized or excluded histories? What possibilities does performance offer for expanding understandings of restitution to encompass not only the physical return of cultural heritage but also the embodied reactivation of displaced memories and knowledge? How might contemporary artists draw on African epistemologies to move beyond the limitations of the colonial archive and imagine new collective futures?
Taking the 1922 Revisited program and Jelili Atiku’s Eyes No Dey Forget Wetin Heart See as points of departure, the conversation considers performance as a mode of both contesting dominant historical narratives and activating and transmitting indigenous knowledge.
